Indexed Universal Life: Build Tax-Advantaged Wealth
An Indexed Universal Life (IUL) policy is more than life insurance — it's a financial tool that can build cash value with downside protection.
What Is an IUL?
IUL is permanent life insurance. Part of your premium pays for the death benefit; the rest is credited interest based on the performance of a market index (like the S&P 500). The key feature: a 0% floor.
The 0% Floor
When the index goes up, your cash value earns index-linked interest (subject to caps and participation rates). When the index goes down, you earn 0% — your cash value never loses money due to market downturns.
Tax-Advantaged Access
You can access your cash value through policy loans, which may be tax-free (subject to policy requirements and Tax Code 7702). Many families use IUL as a supplemental retirement vehicle.
Living Benefits
Many IUL policies include living benefit riders that may let you access the death benefit early if you experience a qualifying illness.
IUL vs. 401(k)
- IUL — Market downside protection, tax-free access via loans, death benefit, flexible contributions
- 401(k) — No downside protection, taxed on withdrawal, no death benefit, capped annual contributions
Is IUL Right for Everyone?
IUL works best for people who:
- Want permanent protection with growth potential
- Have a long time horizon
- Want tax-advantaged access to cash value
